# Translatory Motion- Definition, Types, Examples

To study motion intimately there’s a requirement to classify motion supported different criteria. We can classify the motion of varied bodies on the idea of the way they move. There are various sorts of motion an object or a body can undergo. There are different types of motions, namely: translatory motion, rotational motion, periodic motion and non-periodic motion. Here, in this article we will learn translatory motion in detail.

## What is Translatory Motion

Translatory motion is the motion in which every point on the moving body is at constant distance from other particles and moves through the same distance in the same interval of time.

Translational motion is other name for translatory motion. If any object is in translatory motion then there cannot be any relative motion between different particles of the body.

During the translatory motion of an object, the paths that particles follow may or may not be parallel. If the object moves such that all the particles in the object move parallel to each other then the motion is called pure translational motion.

### Conditions for Translatory Motion

• There should be no relative motion between particles of the object.
• Every particle of the object should travel same distance in same amount of time.
• Radius of curvature for different particles at any instant should be same about different centres. (This is significant is projectile motion).

## Types of Translatory Motion

There are two types of translatory motion:-

1. Rectilinear motion
2. Curvilinear motion

### Rectilinear Motion

When each and every particle of the object moves in a straight line, then the motion is rectilinear motion. The object travels in straight line. Hence the name rectilinear motion.

A metro moving on a straight track is an example of rectilinear motion. Another example of rectilinear motion can be bullet fired from a gun.

### Curvilinear Motion

Curvilinear motion is the motion of object along a curved path such that radius of curvature at any instant for any particle is same about different centers.

For example:- Projectile thrown up in the air follows curvilinear motion. (If body thrown does not rotate).

• Cat, bus moving on a straight road.
• Coin moving on carom board.
