Why do you think Hester refused to name her lover and his identity when asked by the Puritan society? Hester has multiple affairs, and therefore, she does not want to reveal all the information to the society, which will create a problem for everybody. Hester does not want her society to know about her personal life. Hester is aware that if her secrets are revealed, the punishment that Dimmesdale would undergo will be far worse than hers.
