I relate to Erikson s autonomy versus shame and doubt This stage begins around 18 months when toddlers build self awareness At this stage toddles want to make their own choices themselves therefore parents must give the child space and offer support if needed If parents hoover their children and don t allow them the freedom or access to think for themselves a child will build shame and self doubt they will lack confidence and become relient of their parents Since I was my mom s first child she admits to having a lot fear of allowing me to do things that would make her uncomfortable so she would either do it for me or make me stop For a while I was anxious doing things because I was anxious that my mom would find out For example my mom did not allow me to walk alone in middle school She would talk about the dangers out in the real world when my friends wanted to walk to 711 I would want to join them but I would always become anxious that something would happen to me or that my mom would find out
