If a small amount of acid is added to the blood buffering system: H₂CO3 → HCO3 + H+ the pH will be maintained because more H* will be released by the buffer. the pH will go up from 7.4 the acid will increase the solutions free hydroxide ions (OH) the pH will be maintained because excess H* will be removed by the buffer.
