Jean Senebier was a Swiss scientist who wanted to show where the O₂ produced by photosynthetic organisms came from. Through his experiments he discovered that the amount of oxygen produced is roughly proportional to the amount of carbon dioxide available to the plant. He concluded that carbon dioxide became incorporated into the organic molecules and the oxygen of the CO₂ was released as O₂ via the stomata into the atmosphere.
