Important Background Information: The cytoplasm in blood

Important Background Information: The cytoplasm in blood cells is composed of 99% water (approximately), the remaining 1% is composed of solutes dissolved within the cytoplasm. Question: You have become severely dehydrated and end up in the hospital. A nurse brings in an IV bag which is a .9% saline solution (.9% salt, 99.1% distilled water) to inject straight into your bloodstream. Explain using your biological knowledge about osmosis why they do not give you an IV bag with 100% water and what would happen to your blood cells if they did. (A diagram may be helpful here) You cannot use the words hypotonic, hypertonic or isotonic (we did not learn them in this class and they are not needed to answer the question)
